Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is wedding photojournalism?
A:
I am a working photojournalist taking assignments from newspapers and magazines on a weekly basis. I am responsible for finding images that go with words and create a comprehensive package to be published in the mass media, be it website, magazine, newspaper or even television. I take my experience of documenting what is going on around me and apply that to covering your wedding, my “assignment” for that day. In doing so I approach the wedding in the same way I would most of my assignments:
  • I use 35mm camera equipment. Two cameras on me at all times with back-ups in the car. I prefer 35mm gear because of mobility, motor drives, ease of lense switching, and ease of film loading. Other formats do not allow for such ease or for great amounts of film to be put through the camera.
  • Medium format is NOT required for great images or prints. Color negative technology has come a long way and today’s film’s can make 11"x14" prints that look amazing! Many medium format wedding photographers will try to dismiss anyone shooting in 35mm, compare the work before you make a decision. If you want your day documented and the moments captured, the decision should be easy.
  • I do NOT use an assistant. Many photographers use an assistant to carry their gear and load their cameras, but trained photojournalists are used to working on stories by themselves. No assistant means less distraction and I don’t have to worry about an assistant being in any of the pictures!
Q: Since proof albums are included in your package, why not offer a formal bridal album?
A: Photography is priority one and I want great images to be the focus. Albums are very personal and my tastes may vary greatly from yours, I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction, but photography is what I know best.
Q: My mom wants some (but not a lot of) formals. Do you do those?
A: Of course! The formals and "posed" pictures always make there way into the wedding and I have plenty of experience shooting them, both inside and out, but remember the emphasis of this site: photojournalism. Documenting moments is the priority. If you prefer to see more formal pictures than "found moments," you should keep looking...
Q: What if you don’t shoot all 35 rolls of film? Is an adjustment in price made?
A: Getting high quality images from one of the most important days of your lives is why you're hiring me. My fee is set in accordance with my experience, energy and personality when approaching this assignment. The price remains the same if 15 or 35 rolls are shot. Image making should be thought of in terms of quality, not quantity.
Q: Do you shoot black & white film?
A: Yes. I shoot primarily color negative film, but will mix in black & white when it is requested. On average, I've shot no more than 40% black & white, as you can always convert color images to black & white, but never the reverse.
Q: Do you travel?
A: Yes! Please call to discuss your travel plans.
